One of the most common questions we’re asked by brides lately is: “How long does it take to get a wedding dress made?” Closely followed by: “What if I need a wedding dress quickly?” If you’re feeling unsure about timings, you’re absolutely not alone, and this blog is definitely for you...
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a real shift in how brides shop for their wedding dress. More and more of you lovely brides are leaving it later, you’re planning weddings faster, or simply not realising how long the process can take. The good news? The bridal industry has evolved and there are now more options than ever before.
Traditionally, a wedding dress takes around 6–10 months to be made once you’ve chosen and ordered it. This is because most bridal gowns are made-to-order. Your dress isn’t usually sitting in a warehouse waiting, it’s created specifically for you by the designer in your chosen size, style, and colour and details. On top of that, you’ll also need to allow time for delivery from the designer, plus alterations (typically around 6–8 weeks) including final fittings to ensure everything is perfect. This is why brides have historically been advised to start shopping for their dress around 12–18 months before the big day. It allows for a relaxed, enjoyable experience with plenty of choice and no pressure. However, things have changed and as an award-winning, family-run bridal boutique with over 20 years of experience, we’ve seen the bridal landscape shift significantly. Brides today are booking weddings more quickly, planning in shorter timeframes, and juggling busy lives and decision-making differently. And importantly, designers and boutiques have adapted to meet that demand. So while the traditional timeline still exists, it’s no longer the only option.

If you’re worried that you’ve left it too late, please don’t panic. We regularly help brides who are getting married within months, sometimes even weeks, and there are several ways we can make it work. Many designers now offer what’s known as “quick ship” wedding dresses. These are gowns that can be produced in a much shorter timeframe are prioritised in the production schedule, and sometimes use pre-prepared elements to speed up the process. Depending on the designer, these dresses can arrive in as little as 12 weeks, sometimes sooner. This has been a real game-changer for our brides who don’t have the luxury of a long lead time.
Another positive change in the industry is that some designers are now holding stock of their most popular gowns and sizes. This means we can check availability immediately and order dresses with a much faster turnaround, offering options that simply weren’t possible a few years ago. At Abigail’s Collection, we also offer a selection of off-the-peg wedding dresses. This means the dress you try on is the dress you buy often at a significantly reduced price and you can often take it home straight away. This is the perfect solution if your wedding is fast approaching, you’ve fallen in love with a dress in-store, or you simply don’t want to wait months for production.
Alterations can then be arranged to ensure the perfect fit, but the biggest part, finding your dress, is done instantly and you can breathe! Every bride’s journey is different, but based on our experience, here’s what we recommend. If you’ve just got engaged and are starting to plan your wedding, we would always suggest beginning your dress search 12–18 months before your wedding date if you have that time. This gives you the widest choice of designers and styles, a relaxed and enjoyable experience, and plenty of time for made-to-order gowns and fittings.

If you’re getting married this year and haven’t found your dress yet, please don’t panic. We are seeing more and more brides in exactly this position and we have got you! There are still plenty of options available. With quick ship gowns, designer stock, and off-the-peg dresses, it is often entirely possible to find your dream dress within a much shorter timeframe than you might expect. The key is to start now and explore what’s available.

Your plans, your venue, your style, and even your vision for the day are likely to evolve after your venue is secured. We always recommend waiting until your wedding plans are more established (with the date) so that everything feels aligned and right for you. Whether you have 18 months, 10 months, 6 months, or even just a few weeks, there are solutions available and we’ll move heaven and earth to meet your needs!
